About Us

Mission Statement
The University of New Mexico's Pre-Medical Society has a mission to spread awareness to the community about opportunities that exist within all fields of medicine. We are an organization made for and run by UNM undergraduate students. One of our primary goals is to provide students with information and resources pertaining to volunteering, shadowing, and research. Additionally, we try to bring awareness regarding issues in the healthcare field that affect the world today, especially those that affect the state of New Mexico. Ultimately, our aim is to encourage members to network, support, and share resources with other aspiring pre-medical and pre-health students so that we can all effectively navigate our academic paths and be well-prepared for our future healthcare endeavors.

What is your advice for other pre-meds?

Learn how to manage your time. Use a planner or schedule to put dates of exams, due dates for homework, etc. To make sure you're always aware and turn in assignments on time.

Don't be afraid to ask for advice! I feel like there's so much pre-med students are expected to do that it  becomes overwhelming. Asking your peers or advisors for advice on what you can do or what you have been doing is more helpful than being confused/overwhelmed alone. Many of those people have likely been in a similar situation as you, so they understand where you are coming from!

The journey can be overwhelming, but always remember why you started. Finding a healthy balance is crucial. Protect your mental health, and don't be afraid to rest when you need to.

Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. Whether it's getting shadowing opportunities, clarifying something with a professor, or navigating paperwork, sometimes you have to be (politely) persistent to make things happen. ALSO! Pick a good professor using Rate My Professor, do practice exams to prepare for how you'll be tested, and use The Organic Chemistry Tutor for help when the material gets confusing.

Find what genuinely excites you about medicine. Don't feel pressured to "check every box" or fill your schedule with ECs you aren't interested in. Your passions will shine through in application-and more importantly, you'll avoid burnout by dedicating time for hobbies/ECs you actually enjoy. Everyone's journey is different, so embrace your story and stay true to  what matters to you!

Make sure to shadow! Shadowing may seem intimidating at first, but it is the best way to take a peak into the profession you're going into and see all kinds of specialties!

Throughout my first year I learned to put yourself out there. Join clubs, shadow, apply to research programs, and make connections. It's easy to get overwhelmed with academics, and extracurricular activities provide a healthy escape form that. All you have to do is look for them.

Being a pre-med is an incredibly challenging path, don't ever think you're alone in your struggles, and don't hesitate to reach out to others for help!
