Why Become a Member?
At the Pre-Med Society, we are committed to helping you become the most well-rounded candidate possible. We offer valuable opportunities for both regular and official members, with exclusive perks for official members:
Guest Speakers |
|
We prioritize the needs of our official members when selecting guest speakers. If there is a specific specialty you are interested in, let us know the semester before, and we will strive to arrange a speaker in that field.
Volunteering Opportunities |
|
To help members build lasting relationships within the community, we consistently volunteer with the same three organizations once a month. This ensures a total of at least three volunteer events per month, allowing members to develop meaningful connections. Since some events have limited space, official members receive priority access. Additionally, official members gain access to our Volunteer Opportunities Resource, which provides contact information, event details, and connections to reputable organizations. Finding volunteer opportunities that fit a busy college schedule can be difficult—this resource makes it easier to give back while balancing academics.
Leadership Opportunities |
|
Leadership experience is essential for medical school applications. Throughout the year, we invite students to apply for officer and officer intern positions, which are open exclusively to official members.
Networking with Healthcare Professionals |
|
Our meetings offer an excellent opportunity to connect with healthcare professionals. If you cannot find a connection during a meeting, official members can request assistance, and we will work to connect them with professionals in their desired specialty or department.
Resume & Application Support |
|
Our officers have extensive experience with applications and resumes, having worked with committee members and strategy specialists. Official members receive priority scheduling for one-on-one resume reviews and workshops on personal statements, secondary applications, and more.
Workshops |
|
Throughout the year, we offer a variety of workshops designed to strengthen your skills and enhance your medical school application. These include MCAT strategy workshops, where students can learn effective test-taking techniques, as well as mock MCAT exams to simulate real testing conditions. We also host suture workshops to provide hands-on experience with basic suturing techniques, along with personal statement and application workshops to help craft compelling medical school applications. Additionally, we offer BLS/CPR certification courses at a discounted rate, ensuring members gain essential life-saving skills. Due to high demand, official members always receive first access to these workshops.
MCAT Resources |
|
To support our members in preparing for the MCAT, we maintain an Official Member Drive filled with valuable study materials. This includes question sets, access to the MSAR portal (which contains admission statistics and data for medical schools), and mock study schedules to help structure test preparation. We also provide admissions guides and prep books, ensuring our members have the tools they need to succeed. These resources are carefully curated to give official members a strong advantage in their MCAT preparation and medical school application process. Furthermore, official members are eligible to possibly win a MCAT Prep Course.
Shadowing Opportunities |
|
We strive to assist our members in securing shadowing opportunities each year. To support you in this process, we connect you with potential preceptor contacts at UNMH, providing a starting point for arranging shadowing experiences. Official members receive access to additional contacts for expanded opportunities.
Annual Events |
|
A portion of membership dues helps fund our end-of-year banquet, where we recognize outstanding members, hold officer elections, and celebrate the conclusion of the school year with peers. In addition, we host annual panels, including our medical school panel, NP/PA panel, resident panel, and more.
Membership Points
The membership point system allows the officers of the Society to track involvement in both the community and the organization, while also providing a healthy competitive atmosphere that encourages for members to "out-serve" each other both inside and outside of the Society. The button below will direct to the membership point log/leaderboard, where progress and ranking are tracked semi-anonymously (Last 4 of UNM ID only) in the Society google drive (for mobile: best viewed in Google Sheets App).
The point system is as follows:
3 pts / each meeting attended
1 pt / volunteer event
0.5 pt / reflection after volunteer event
1 pt / volunteer event
0.5 pt / reflection after volunteer event
